A paint brush should be held similar to a pencil (see the photos). How the brush fits in your hand may factor the style and size of brush you use. However, selecting too small a paint brush will prolong your projects. A larger and thicker brush holds more paint. We have a 4” wide, one inch thick professional paint brush with long bristles that is a true work out to paint with, so keep that in mind as well.
Loading a brush – “the slap technique” a friend of ours calls it. First stick roughly the bottom third of the bristles in the paint. Then tap each side of the brush against the inside of the bucket. If you slap the brush, you will likely get some spatter, so do it gently.
This loads the brush with a good amount of paint. A brush loaded with too little paint will leave more brush marks on the surface painted. Too much paint will lead to drips.
